On the 17th Executive Committee meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held in Maiduguri, Borno State. The Sultan of Sokoto and President -General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs represented as (NSCIA), His Eminence Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III has strongly condemned the social media, labeling it as a dangerous entity that requires immediate action to safeguard national stability.
He said the social media is a "terrorist organization". Speaking at the 17th occasion on Tuesday, the Sultan lamented on the role of social media as it is being exploited to spread falsehoods and fuel tensions nationwide.
"What happened has happened. It can’t come and be through social media. That’s one terrorist organisation…social media.
He said we cannot ignore the harm caused by social media, where somebody will just sit at the comfort of his home and fabricate stories, presenting them as facts, which misleads the public and escalates conflicts. This unchecked spread of misinformation operates like a destructive force one that must be addressed decisively. Our security agencies need to deal with this Terrorist Organisation called the social media and take firm measures against this growing threat."
