Sim Fubara must apologise for peace to return - Wike

The current minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has said that he is ready to open reconciliation with the suspended governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara. Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Friday, April 18, Wike said Fubara must offer a genuine apology to resolve the political turmoil in the state.

The conflict between Wike and Sim Fubara began in 2023 when Fubara took over the mantle of leadership of the state as the elected governor. The feud between Wike and Fubara has created division among top stakeholders and caused two parties in the state house of assembly. This resulted in the state house of assembly being demolished to minimize the powers of the members loyal to the Minister of FCT, Wike.

As tensions began to heighten even further and affect the security of the state, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency. He suspended Governor Fubara for six months and appointed a sole administrator to manage the state.

Wike criticized the lack of sincere efforts to resolve the crisis. He emphasized the importance of honest dialogue and questioned whether anyone had genuinely tried to promote peace in Rivers State.

Wike stated that reconciliation is possible if Fubara approaches him with sincerity, noting that the president's intervention had led to the withdrawal of the impeachment notice by Assembly members.

He added, “At the end of the day, if we don’t achieve anything, we’ll be right back to square one, which makes no sense.
