Enugu Akanu Ibiam International Airport has been shut down temporarily to allow for emergency repairs on the runway. The shutdown, as confirmed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), is a result of growing concerns about the safety of airport operations at the airport.
The FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, was quoted on Saturday in a statement saying, This measure became necessary due to a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway. Hence, emergency repairs will be conducted on that portion of the runwayfrom April 22nd to May 6th, 2025.
And while the repairs are ongoing, all flights will be redirected to nearby airports. And in compliance with the Nigerian civil aviation regulations, FAAN has hereby closed the runway during this period, which means the runway is nolonger open for landing or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period.
Earlier, before the closure, Airpeace one of the leading carriers in the country, had announced the suspension of its airplanes from the Enugu Airport. In a statement issued by Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, Head of Corporate Communications at Air Peace, the airline attributed the decision to the bad condition of the runway, which has been causing repeated disruptions to flight schedules.
The statement reads, “We regret to inform you that all flights scheduled to Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, are temporarily suspended due to safety concerns about the Enugu airport runway. The situation of the Enugu runway has been causing major disruptions to Air Peace flights, hence the decision to temporarily suspend further flights into this airport until further notice. At Air Peace, we prioritize safety first over convenience.”
Also, they mention that flights meant for Enugu Airport will now be diverted to Asaba and Anambra Airports as they await the completion of the work on the runways at the airport.
"The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria has appealed to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this period. We sincerely apologize for the late and unprompted notice regarding the closure. Passengers and flights will now be diverted to nearby airports."
