The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has elected a new president-general. Senator John Azuta-Mbata, a distinguished figure in Nigerian politics, has emerged victorious in a keenly contested election. This development holds significant implications for Igbo unity and representation in Nigeria.

Prior to his election as Ohanaeze president-general, Senator Azuta-Mbata served as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. He has a distinguished career in both public service and the private sector. He is now the13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Senator Azuta-Mbata hails from Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. This region, situated in the eastern part of Rivers State, is known for its rich cultural heritage and its significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Rivers State. Senator Azuta-Mbata's roots in this region provide him with a deep understanding of the challenges and aspirations of the people of Rivers State and the broader Igbo community.

He is taking the mantle of leadership from Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu who was appointed to complete the tenure to succeed the late Chief Emmanuel lwuanyanwu. Present at the election was the Governors of Enugu, Imo and Anambra States, also Senators like Chris Ngige, Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Former Archbishop of Anglican Communion, Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma among other Igbo dignitaries.
