Nigeria's government is facing a challenging situation over proposed tax changes, with key lawmakers Like Ali Ndume suggesting these plans might need to wait.Â
President Bola Tinubu wants to change how taxes work in Nigeria through four new bills. However, Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South thinks these changes might be coming at the wrong time, given how many Nigerians are struggling with daily expenses.
The government introduced several bills in October, including:
- The Nigeria Tax Bill
- The Tax Administration Bill
- The Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill
Several groups have concerns over the introduced bills:
- Northern State Governors are pushing back
- The National Economic Council wants more discussion
- Lawmakers think the timing isn't right given current economic hardships
The People's Voice Senator Ndume put it plainly: "Nigerians are not willing to talk, hear, or pay any tax now." He believes the government needs to consider the current economic situation before pushing forward with new tax policies.
But President Tinubu still stands firm on keeping the bills in play, he said he's open to changes from parliament. However, given the current pushback, these tax reforms might face significant challenges ahead.
