A tragic incident at a military base in northern Nigeria has led to an internal investigation after one navy officer allegedly shot and killed a fellow service member. Military leadership is now taking steps to address this serious situation.

The incident took place at a forward military post in Dansadau, Katsina State, during the early morning hours around 3:12 AM on Friday. The Defense Headquarters' spokesperson, Major General Edward Buba, confirmed the event to the public.

The military has identified the officer involved as Leading Seaman Akila A., who has been immediately taken into custody. Officials have removed his weapons and placed him in detention while they investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Major General Buba explained that once the investigation is complete, the case will go before a special military court that handles cases involving service members. This process ensures proper handling of incidents within military jurisdiction.

The military is currently following protocol by first notifying the deceased service member's family before releasing their name to the public. "We're asking media outlets to please be sensitive in their reporting out of respect for the family during this difficult time," Major General Buba added.
