Nigeria Drops Money Laundering Charges Against Binance Executive

The Nigerian government has dismissed money laundering charges against Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive and U.S. citizen. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced this decision at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, October 23.

The EFCC explained that Gambaryan was simply an employee at Binance and not directly involved in the activities under investigation. This view was supported by his lawyer, Mark Mordi, who confirmed his client had no role in the company's financial decisions.

Highlight of the background:

  • Binance and two executives faced charges involving $35 million in alleged money laundering
  • The executives were Gambaryan (U.S. head of financial crime compliance) and Nadeem Anjarwalla (British-Kenyan regional manager for Africa)
  • Anjarwalla escaped custody on March 22, 2024
  • Gambaryan was arrested and held in Kuje Correctional Facility after being denied bail twice

The charges' withdrawal came after extensive diplomatic discussions between Nigerian and U.S. officials, with American lawmakers actively supporting Gambaryan's release.
