A federal judge in Abuja has ordered the head of DSS to appear in court. For disobeying court orders, the man could face possible jail time. This latest development spotlights an ongoing high-profile case that has captured national attention.
The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi, must now explain to the court why he shouldn't be punished for ignoring previous court instructions. At the heart of the matter is the treatment of Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent political activist currently in custody.
The issue arose when the DSS failed to follow Judge Binta Nyako's order that Kanu be allowed to meet with his lawyers three times every week. Court documents show that since September 27, Kanu's legal team hasn't been permitted to visit him at all, making it nearly impossible for his lawyers to prepare his defence properly.
The court has already sent an official warning to Ajayi on October 18, making it clear that continuing to ignore the court's orders could result in imprisonment. This warning, known as a "Form 48 Notice," serves as a final reminder of the serious consequences of disobeying court orders.
For context, Kanu has been held by the DSS since 2021, when he was brought back to Nigeria from Kenya under controversial circumstances.
