Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was unlawfully detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while preparing for an official trip to the United Kingdom. He has since been released.
The NLC announced his release early this morning through a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
In response to his detention, the NLC issued a communiqué condemning the act as an attempt to intimidate and silence the labour movement. They demanded his immediate and unconditional release by 12 pm on Monday, stressing that Ajaero is neither a fugitive nor a criminal, and his detention was unwarranted.
