Federal Government Raises Public Service Salaries

public service

The Nigerian government has decided to increase salaries for public service workers. This good news was shared by Ekpo Nta, who leads the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, during a meeting with reporters in Abuja.

Nta explained that this change comes after the government updated the Minimum Wage Act in 2024 and made an agreement with labor unions. This means more money for many different types of government workers, including:

  • Research and education staff
  • Civil Servants
  • University teachers
  • Workers in colleges and polytechnics
  • Medical professionals
  • Health workers
  • Police officers
  • Military personnel
  • Intelligence officers

These increases are happening because of two main reasons:

  1. The government changed the law to raise the minimum wage from 30,000 naira to 70,000 naira.
  2. The government and worker representatives agreed on how to adjust salaries based on this new minimum wage.

President Bola Tinubu signed this new minimum wage law on July 29, 2024. The salary increases will start from that same date.

This change means that many government workers will see bigger paychecks, which should help them cope with the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
