Chidinma Onwe Adetshina Crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024

Chidinma Onwe Adetshina has emerged as Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, just weeks after her withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant due to controversy surrounding her nationality.

The 23-year-old law student claimed the title at a vibrant event held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos on August 31, where she outshined 24 other contestants.

Chidinma's journey to the crown has been tumultuous. Born to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother in Soweto, she faced significant backlash after questions arose about her eligibility to compete in the Miss South Africa pageant.

Critics, including some South Africans, argued that she was unqualified because her father is not South African. This scrutiny escalated to the point where South Africa's Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, launched an investigation into her citizenship following complaints from the pageant organizers and the public.

The investigation revealed that there were concerns about the legitimacy of her mother's South African identity, leading to accusations that her mother's identity may have been misappropriated.

This prompted Chidinma to withdraw from the Miss South Africa competition, a decision that was met with both relief and further criticism from various quarters.

Chidinma's resilience has shone through. Representing Taraba State, she captured the Miss Universe Nigeria title, a victory she described as both hard-earned and rewarding.

Chidinma will now represent Nigeria at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November. Her win has sparked a mix of reactions on social media, with many celebrating her triumph as a testament to her strength and determination.

As she embarks on this new chapter, Chidinma Onwe Adetshina stands as a symbol of perseverance, navigating the complexities of identity and nationality in the world of beauty pageants.

Her story highlights the challenges faced by contestants in an increasingly globalized society, where questions of heritage and belonging can overshadow personal achievements.
