Swedish manager Janne Andersson has confirmed that he is in discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the vacant Super Eagles coaching job. The 61-year-old, who has been without a job since leaving the Swedish national team last November, is one of the leading candidates for the position.

In an interview with Swedish news outlet Expressen on Friday, August 23, Andersson stated, "I can confirm that I have had a dialogue with the Nigeria Football Federation. It's a huge footballing nation so I'm extremely flattered to be in the running to be their next national team coach."

The former Halmstads BK coach further added, "Dialogue is ongoing and I don't really want to say more than that. I have been in this industry for so long and know that things can happen in different ways. So we'll see what happen in the future."

Andersson's potential appointment comes at a crucial time for the Super Eagles, as they prepare for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are set to commence on September 7. The NFF is under pressure to fill the coaching vacancy left by Finidi George, who resigned just two matches into his two-year contract in May.

With Andersson's impressive credentials, including leading Sweden to the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the last 16 in the 2020 European Championship, he could be a valuable asset to the Nigerian national team. However, his limited experience outside of Sweden and the timing of his potential availability, which may not align with the start of the qualifiers, could pose challenges for his appointment.

As the NFF continues its search for the next Super Eagles coach, Andersson's confirmation of ongoing discussions with the NFF has added an intriguing twist to the saga. Football fans in Nigeria and beyond will be eagerly awaiting further developments.
