Marina Abramovic: Transforming Energy Exhibition Opens in Shanghai

Marina Abramovic, the acclaimed performance artist, is preparing to unveil her inaugural museum exhibition in China, titled "Marina Abramović: Transforming Energy."

This significant event will take place at the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai from October 10, 2024, to February 28, 2025.

The exhibition promises to be a transformative experience, showcasing interactive and participatory artworks.

Among the highlights will be the "Transitory Objects" series, which includes unique pieces crafted from various minerals and elements, such as telepathy phones and crystal shoes.

These works are inspired by her legendary 1988 performance, The Lovers, where she and fellow artist Ulay traversed the Great Wall of China, marking a pivotal moment in both their artistic and personal lives.

Curated by Shai Baitel, the artistic director of MAM Shanghai, the exhibition will feature an extensive collection of over 1,000 photographs documenting the Great Wall walk, alongside new artworks created specifically for this occasion.

Spanning three floors of the museum, "Transforming Energy" aims to provide a thorough overview of Abramovic's prolific career and her enduring artistic legacy.

In reflecting on this upcoming exhibition, Abramovic expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Nearly 40 years after Ulay and I walked 2,500 kilometers to meet in the middle of the Great Wall of China, I am looking forward to opening ‘Transforming Energy’ at MAM Shanghai.

I return to China with great excitement, presenting a body of work connected to that experience.”
