House of Representatives Introduces Counter Subversion Bill 2024: What You Need to Know

The Counter Subversion Bill 2024 has been introduced in the House of Representatives, proposing severe penalties for Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem.

Offenders could face fines of N5 million and up to 10 years in prison.

The bill, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, also penalizes the destruction of national symbols and places of worship with the same punishments.

The bill goes beyond symbolism. It tackles practical issues like illegal roadblocks and unauthorized activities.

Fines and prison terms will vary based on the severity of the offense. This flexible approach ensures proportionate consequences.

Update:

Currently, the bill awaits a second reading in the House of Representatives. During this stage, lawmakers will debate its principles and potential amendments.
