The Canadian Embassy Abuja has temporarily closed its doors following a fire incident that claimed the lives of two people on Monday, November 6. The fire, which started around 9 a.m., was caused by a faulty generator in the commission’s office building.

The fire was quickly contained by the emergency services, but not before it engulfed the generator room and spread to some parts of the building. Two staff members of the commission, who were working in the generator room, died from smoke inhalation and burns. No other casualties were reported.

In the meantime, The High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Mr. Perry Calderwood has issued a travel advisory to its citizens, advising them to avoid all non-essential travels to Nigeria, including the capital city of Abuja. The advisory cited the “unpredictable situation throughout the country and the significant risk of terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks and kidnappings” as the reasons for the warning.

The embassy also urged its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution, monitor local media, follow the instructions of local authorities, and register with the embassy if they were in Nigeria or planning to travel there. The embassy said it would continue to provide consular assistance to Canadians in Nigeria through its emergency contact number and email address.
