A man named Ekelediri Nwankwo has suffered severe burns and injuries after his wife, Hope Nwala, allegedly attacked him with hot groundnut oil and a hammer in Okehi community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Sources said the incident was triggered by a disagreement over the wife’s younger sister who lived with them and who the husband accused of being disrespectful and indecent.
Hope, who is from the Obite Community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state, ran away from Okehi after the alleged assault.
The victim told reporters on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, that he decided to send his sister-in-law away and gave her some money to go back home, but his wife was against his decision and they had a heated argument.
He also said that he noticed some strange behaviour from his wife and sister-in-law and saw them with a mysterious man in the shop he rented for his wife. He said he confronted his wife about it, but she became violent and poured hot oil on him while he was sleeping and then hit him with a hammer.
He said: “I asked my wife’s younger sister to leave my house because of how she behaved. She was rude to me and dressed badly. She also used my matrimonial bed when I was around. No young man can accept that. But my wife did not want her sister to leave.
I also saw my wife with a tall black man in her shop. He was not there for business. He followed my wife and her sister everywhere.
So, I gave her sister two thousand naira to go home so that I could find out what was happening in my house, but my wife got angry. She used boiled groundnut oil on me when I was sleeping and then hit me with a hammer.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and said the police are looking for the suspect who is on the run.
She said: “The incident is true. It was reported at the Igwuruta Police State Station. The woman has escaped but we are tracking her down to make her face justice.”
