The White House announced that another US aircraft carrier, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, will soon start its “long-scheduled deployment” to the Mediterranean sea. This comes as Israel gears up for a ground invasion into Palestine.

John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, said the Eisenhower and its strike group will cross the Atlantic Ocean on their way to the Mediterranean in the next week. He said they are not meant to join the USS Gerald R. Ford, which is already in the eastern Mediterranean to deter Iran and other countries that might oppose Israel in the ongoing war in the region.

Kirby said the Eisenhower “will be available if needed” in the eastern Mediterranean, but no decisions have been made yet. He said the US is sending a clear message that it is ready to act if anyone tries to escalate or expand the war against Israel. He also said the US will continue to talk to Israel about their needs to defend themselves and their people.

The war started when Hamas, a Palestinian group, launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, called Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. It involved rockets, land, sea and air raids on Israel. Israel responded with a powerful military campaign against Gaza, where Hamas is based.
