Lagos State Government begins demolition of structures without compensation

Lagos State Government

Today, October 26, the Lagos State Government has started dismantling the buildings that were in the part of the drainage system on the Lekki 2-Ikota channel.

The state government started demolishing homes constructed on the drainage channel in an effort to end the area's recurring flooding. Many residents have been left homeless as a result of the exercise since their properties were demolished.

The Government said since the owners of the destroyed homes were formally told that their structures were impeding the free flow of rainwater into the drainage systems, the state government has declared that it will not be paying the homeowners any compensation for the demolition.

At this economic difficulty in the country the State Government will demolish properties of this size without paying any form of compensation. This is unacceptable and not the right way to handle citizens.
