Ivory Coast President Sacks Prime Minister and Cabinet in Unexpected Shakeup

President Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast has announced a major overhaul of the country’s government, dismissing the prime minister and dissolving the cabinet in a surprise move. 

The president’s secretary-general, Abdourahmane Cissé, said in a statement that the decision was made by the president using his constitutional powers. He thanked Prime Minister Patrick Achi and all the ministers for their service to the nation.

The statement said that the outgoing officials will remain in their positions until a new government is formed later this month. Ivory Coast is gearing up for an election in 2025, and has seen three prime ministers since 2020. Achi took over from Hamed Bakayoko, who died of cancer in March 2021. Bakayoko’s predecessor had also passed away in office due to illness.
