A school bus overturned on the M53 in Wirral, England, causing “a number of casualties” and injuring 50 others. A woman with serious injuries was taken to the hospital by air ambulance. Two hospitals declared “major incidents” and asked people to avoid their emergency rooms.

The bus belonged to Caldy Grange Grammar School and was carrying students from another school as well. The schools said they were supporting the affected students and families.

The police said the bus hit a barrier on the motorway around 8:00 BST. Unison said its health workers stopped their strike to help with the emergency. Local politicians expressed their sympathy and urged people to stay away from the scene.
