PDP’s Prince Nnaji Wins Enugu East Senatorial Election as Tribunal Sacks Labour Party’s Prof. Nnamchi

Enugu East Senatorial

The Enugu East Senatorial Election Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of Prof. Nnamchi of the Labour Party and declared Prince Cornelius Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the February 25, 2023 poll.

The tribunal, headed by A. M. Abubakar, delivered its judgment on Friday, September 8, 2023, after hearing the petition filed by Prince Nnaji, who was a former member of the House of Representatives.

Prince Nnaji had challenged the declaration of Prof. Nnamchi by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the grounds that he was not duly sponsored and qualified to contest the election under the Labour Party.

The tribunal agreed with the petitioner and ruled that Prof. Nnamchi was not eligible to run for the senatorial seat because he did not meet the requirements of Section 65(2)(b) of the Constitution, which stipulates that a person must be a member of a political party for at least one year before an election.

The tribunal also ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Prince Nnaji as the duly elected senator for Enugu East Senatorial District.

The judgment has been greeted with joy and celebration by the supporters of Prince Nnaji and the PDP across the 23 wards of the constituency. They hailed the tribunal for upholding justice and democracy in Enugu State.
