Enugu State Electricity Law: Governor Mbah Signs Bill to Boost Economic Development and Investment

Enugu State

The Enugu State Electricity Law was enacted by Governor Dr. Peter Mbah on Friday, at the Government House, Enugu. The Governor said the law was a key milestone for economic development and making Enugu state the first choice for investors, entrepreneurs, tourists, and residents.

He praised the State House of Assembly members for their speedy passage of the Bill. He also appreciated their collaboration with the government across party lines for the benefit of Enugu State.

He said his administration’s vision to grow Enugu State’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion would not be possible without a reliable and sufficient power supply, which was why he sent the Electricity Bill to the House of Assembly about two weeks ago.

As you know, after the Constitutional Amendment and the Electricity Act of 2023, electricity is now on the concurrent list. This gives us the opportunity to participate in the value chain of the electricity industry.

So, Enugu State has wasted no time in ensuring that we establish our own electricity market. That is the essence of this law.

We are now in a position to participate in the generation, transmission, and distribution segments of the electricity market.

We are also, through our regulatory commission, which this Law has empowered us to create, going to be able to oversee the activities of these players – the generation, transmission, and distribution companies that will emerge from it.

So, this is a significant and very important Law for achieving the Enugu of our dreams because the progress and growth of Enugu will all depend on the platform that this law has created. You cannot talk about industry or private sector investment if you don’t have electricity or power.

Enugu, under our administration, is designed and indeed ready to be the first choice for investment and this law is part of the facilitators.

Therefore, we thank members of the Enugu State House of Assembly for their quick action on this Bill, which has become Law today by this assent”, he said.
