Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide to Celebrate Igbo Day and Honour Igbo Heroes on September 29

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, a leading Igbo cultural organization, has announced its plans to celebrate the 2023 Igbo Day on September 29. The event will feature various activities, including the presentation of three Igboland awards to the families of Igbo heroes who have passed away.

The President-General of the organization, Engr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, said that the Igbo Day is a day of gratitude and reflection for the Igbo people. He also said that the organization will decide on a fixed date for the new yam festival, which is a major cultural celebration for the Igbo people.

The three Igboland awards are: Grand Heroes of Igboland (GHI), Distinguished Heroes of Igboland (DHI), and Heroes of Igboland (HI). Some of the recipients of the GHI award are Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Maj.Gen. Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi, and Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu. Some of the recipients of the DHI award are Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Dr. Sam Mbakwe, and Prof. Chinua Achebe. Some of the recipients of the HI award are Sen. Francis Ellah, Chief Jerome Udorji, and Chief Richard Ihetu.

The President-General also appealed to the Federal Government to improve the infrastructure and transportation facilities in the South East region, especially the airports and railways. He said that the Igbo people are traders who need better access to international markets.

The Igbo Day celebration will begin on September 24 with a church service at the Cathedral of Good Shepherd in Enugu. On September 28, various committees will be inaugurated to handle different aspects of the organization’s affairs. The main event will take place on September 29 at Michael Okpara Square in Enugu.
