Kerry Washington, the star of Scandal, has written a memoir called “Thicker Than Water” where she reveals a shocking family secret: her father, Earl Washington, is not her biological father. She found out this truth only a few years ago, when she was preparing to appear on a PBS show that traces people’s ancestry through DNA testing.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Washington says that her parents, who had fertility issues, used an anonymous sperm donor to conceive her, but they never told her. They only confessed when they learned that she was going to be on Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr., who advised them to talk to her before the show.
Washington says that the revelation “really turned my world upside down.” She had always felt that something was wrong and that her parents were hiding something from her. She struggled with anxiety, self-esteem problems, and an eating disorder when she was younger. She now thinks that those might have been signs of her subconscious awareness of her parents’ secret.
She says that the discovery also inspired her to write her memoir and share her true story with the world. She says that she now understands her story better and that she feels more love and compassion for her parents. She also says that this book is about her and that she gets to be the most important person in her life.
Kerry Washington’s memoir will be released on Tuesday, September 26.
