Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania to Host 2027 AFCON, Morocco Gets 2025 Edition

2027 AFCON

The 2027 African Cup of Nations will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, making them the first East African nations to do so since Ethiopia in 1976. They beat the joint bid of Nigeria and Benin, who had hoped to host the tournament with the support of their Sports Minister and Football Federation.

Morocco, on the other hand, will host the 2025 edition of the competition, after Algeria, Zambia, and Nigeria-Benin withdrew their bids to back Morocco’s candidacy for the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal. Morocco’s CAF president Patrice Motsepe praised the country’s infrastructure and experience in hosting football events.

Morocco had previously lost its hosting rights for the 2015 AFCON due to the Ebola outbreak. The last time they hosted the tournament was in 1988.

The 2023 AFCON will be held in Ivory Coast in January and February 2024, due to the rainy season in the region. Motsepe admitted that the timing was not ideal for European clubs, but said it was necessary to avoid weather disruptions.
