In Wanzamai village, Tsafe Local Government Area, Zamfara State, gunmen abducted women and children and demanded a ransom of N30 million.
On Friday, April 7, early in the morning, armed robbers stormed a farm in Wanzamai, a neighborhood near the Zamfara-Katsina border, and kidnapped the victims.
About 80 children from Wanzamai village and more than 20 other people from communities in neighboring Katsina State were kidnapped, according to Sani Wanzamai, a resident of Wanzamai village in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to a source who spoke with Daily Trust, the kidnappers had called the relatives of some of the victims and demanded N60m before the kids could be freed.
The ransom has been lowered to N30 million as a result of serious negotiations. The source claimed that they asked the victims' families to go and raise the money.
The State Police Command's spokesman, CSP Muhammad Shehu, stated in a statement that the claimed number of victims was "outrageous."
The command advises the general people to ignore the outlandish figures that are being reported by various media outlets. Zamfara State Police Commissioner CP Kolo Yusuf psc has assured the public, in particular the families of the kidnapped women and children of Wanzamai Village in the state's Tsafe LGA, that the command is working tirelessly with the military and vigilantes to free the captives alive.
"According to information provided by the Village Head of Wanzamai to the Command, about nine (9) women and children left their homes to go collect firewood. They were attacked and taken hostage by bandits as they proceeded farther into the forest to an unidentified location.
When the report was received, the local joint police and other security agencies mobilized to the area and started a search and rescue operation with the goal of freeing the hostages and apprehending the attackers. To support the ongoing rescue effort, the police commissioner also sent out a second tactical police unit.
