The Federal Government has warned foreign airlines operating in Nigeria that they must sell tickets in Nigerian currency or face sanctions. This was announced by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja today.

The minister said that some foreign airlines have been violating Nigerian laws by charging tickets in dollars and denying Nigerians access to cheaper seats. He said that this was unacceptable and that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been instructed to penalize any airline that does not comply.

He also said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is working to ensure that foreign airlines do not have difficulties in repatriating their funds from Nigeria. He said that the government values the contribution of foreign airlines to the Nigerian economy and wants them to be happy in Nigeria.

He said: “We will not tolerate any airline that sells tickets in foreign currency or restricts Nigerians from getting cheaper seats. This is against our laws and we will sanction them. We also want to assure them that we are doing everything possible to make sure that they can get their money out of Nigeria. We need their market and we want them to stay.”
